Dr. Zhen Gao founded VSemi to create a solution for 3D sensing and imaging that would be accessible and easy to use by utilizing LiDAR. Unfortunately, LiDAR technology has received a reputation for being expensive, bulky, power-hungry, and inaccurate at detecting objects at close distances.
Zhen assembled a team with extensive industrial and academic backgrounds with a focus on Time-of-Flight (ToF) technology to develop a world-class 3D sensing solution. ToF hard tech uses less power than traditional LiDAR technology allowing it to be more compact and less expensive to manufacture. ToF also has a longer working range and is less affected by light and other environmental interruptions.
By incorporating different kinds of ToF algorithms, VSemi was able to create affordable, high-performance, and lightweight 3D LiDAR sensors that output accurate real-time 3D point cloud. From autonomous parking to people counting, VSemi's technology delivers greater accuracy, higher sensitivity, and lower computation load than competing LiDAR sensors, enabling next-generation computer vision for robotics, drone, and automotive.
In 2018, the VSemi team enrolled in AC:Incubate, where they met Chao Yu founder and CEO of LoopX – an AC:Studio startup that is reimagining the future of goods transportation by making delivery services affordable using autonomous robots. The two startups decided to form a partnership and collaborate on a 3D autonomous parking project supported by the Ontario Centre of Innovation (OCI).
On November 4, 2022, VSemi invited the AC community to see a demonstration of its autonomous parking solution developed to deliver 360° perception and centimeter-level positioning for LoopX’s robot.
Sally Xu, head of Operations at VSemi provided an in-depth presentation on VSemi’s different products, including the Sentinel, Atom, MP4-160-60, and TAU. Each product is designed for specific tasks across different industries, and all are developed using ToF.
For the finale, attendees accompanied the VSemi team outside where they witnessed a live demonstration of LoopX’s autonomous robot driving around the entire parking lot, avoiding any obstacles, and parking itself perfectly, delivering a box of cupcakes to its guests!
Using VSemi’s anticollision solutions, LoopX’s robots can identify small objects that are the edge cases for other anticollision approaches. The ultrawide FoV prevents robotics from a variety of hazards such as wire detection, cliff detection, dark object detection, etc. Loopx’s robots are eco-friendly, innovative, and built to withstand all weather conditions, making it the perfect fit for VSemi’s high-tech LiDar sensors.
VSemi is dedicated to broadening your senses and empowering your products! Thank you to all who attended its Inspiration Demo Day and for making it the huge success that it was! We hope to see you next time.
